Spearheading the Future of IoT with Next-Generation BAWA Cane

BAWA Cane is an IoT device with enhanced capabilities that reduces head-level and fall accidents to help loved ones gain confidence, mobility freedom, and independence.

Having understood the issues when deploying BAWA Cane across 5 countries, our team needed to come up with a new deployment strategy to keep up with market demands. Consequently, given this golden opportunity to pilot the next-generation BAWA Cane with Infineon and LG, our team redesigned BAWA Cane from the ground-up–with hardware-level security on top of software-level security measures, and time-to-market at heart.

As a result of comprehensive support our team had throughout the 1-month prototyping phase, have enabled us to introduce secure device firmware update (DFU) and secure boot into next-generation BAWA Cane. Both key features we believe should be part of BAWA Cane moving forward.

What does this mean for an end-user?

End-users are guaranteed to only receive legitimate firmware updates from us via secure communication protocols. Moreover, having secure communication between BAWA Cane and other devices protects our end-users against people who are trying to hack into the system. To put it differently, our next-generation system can detect any rogue element and stop attacks.

LG WebOS is used in our production line to test, track, and verify each unit before reaching the hands of our end-users. In other words, this shortens our time-to-market in light of lower time spend validation each and every unit that leaves the production line. In addition, this is another means to prevent rogue devices that did not undergo our testing procedures from connecting to our cloud services.
